A Downtown Dallas Dream

Here at Hakim Sons Films, we not only love weddings, but we jump at the opportunity to explore a new wedding venue. For Julie and Mark’s wedding we shot in the new Omni Dallas Hotel. This is the first wedding we’ve filmed at the Omni’s downtown location. As such, this offered a very unique opportunity for us as well as our clients, Julie and Mark. We had free reign to explore creatively, allowing us to find interesting camera shots and angles. The hotel itself provided a backdrop unparalleled to other wedding venues. The décor boasted Texas elements while maintaining the signature style and elegance that is characteristic of all Omni hotels. We often found ourselves forgetting we were in a hotel. The result of our hard work and the timeless beauty of the hotel combined to form Julie and Mark’s highlight reel. The happy couple was delighted with the outcome, and so were we. After shooting at the Omni Hotel, it is hard to imagine downtown Dallas without it. P.S. We loved the new Omni Hotel so much, we had our company holiday party there!  ...

A Bridal Affair

Recently, more than 40 professionals and fashion enthusiasts gathered in Dallas to enjoy sips, bites and a fashion show at “A Bridal Affair.” The event, hosted by Haute Weddings and D Weddings, showcased the craftsmanship of couture wedding gowns. We were on site at the luxurious Adolphus Hotel to capture every minute of the action. Some may say it was business as usual, but here at Hakim Sons Films we do not rely on the status quo. We transformed an ordinary, chic fashion show into an edgy and trendy affair. This was achieved by substituting soft, romantic music for harder beats and sharper notes. The film itself is shot with dramatic cuts and edits reminiscent of high fashion shows enjoyed on the runways of Paris and Milan. Though subtle, these differences add an extra layer of production and style to our growing repertoire.  ...

Wedding Toasts: How to keep them in your Memories Forever!

We have heard from so many brides how their wedding day not only flew by, but almost felt like a big blur. Weddings can be extremely overwhelming and take a lot out of the bride and groom. Therefore, we always stress the importance of capturing your wedding memories permanently through photos and videos. While every bride knows to have their most precious moments captured through photography on their big day, sometimes they end up skipping over videography of the wedding. There are a variety of reasons that we have heard why brides have not included video as part of their big day, but we have three main reasons why you should allocate a budget for video. Video adds depth: The key here is for your vendors to work in harmony. It’s extremely important for the photographer and videographer to work together to make sure they have captured everything so you can relive any moment in time of this day. With the right combination of vendors, your wedding day video and photos can really complement each other. Video lets you relive your day: The obvious is that videos can let you relive that day any day. As the bride, you cannot be everywhere on your wedding day so the beauty of having a video is that you can see all conversations, dances, and speeches on your big day. The day will go by so fast, so we are able to capture everything for you so that you don’t miss out! Wedding toasts: In a recent article from D weddings, a bride mentions, “One thing I really regret is not having a recording of my dad’s toast at the reception. The day of the wedding was so overwhelming that I would have liked to have a recording of that.” The beauty of the video is we can capture even the smallest things from what your new husband tells you for the first time to all of your wedding toasts. Nothing can help you relive this day for years to come in the way that video can. Finally, here is one of our favorite videos that truly defines the beauty behind videography.  ...

The Big Trend: Statement Stations!

This year is already starting with big trends in the wedding market! If you have not taken a look at our last blog post about 2013 wedding  trends, then make sure you do!  One of the biggest trends for this year that we really want to focus on is “statement stations”. We always tell our brides to start with the basics and work your way down on that “to do” list. Therefore, always start with the budget, then venue, décor, theme, lighting, centerpieces, and originality. It’s important to be original with your wedding and of course, to stay within your budget. Statement stations have been extremely popular since last year, and it seems like they are going to be even bigger this year. Statement stations are exactly what they sound like. They are meant to be a part of your décor, but also to take your wedding guests around the ballroom. Most statement stations are edible or have some type of activity for your guests. They are a great way to add something unique to your event and can be quite affordable since you can make them as customized as you want! The best kind of foods to work with are ones that you can dye. For example, we love these popcorn stations because you can see that each and every one of these stations was customized according to the theme. Another great one we have seen is cotton candy stations! Now of course we have seen the infamous dessert station, but you cannot go wrong here! It helps feed your guests who have that sweet tooth or just want something more than cake! We also have seen brides incorporate an espresso or coffee bar with their dessert bars! We have seen so many stations from carvings, to Asian-themed, to Mexican-themed, to pasta, and even to mac and cheese! The possibilities are truly endless! How delicious does that sound?! Share some of the favorite statement stations you’ve seen or have done or plan to do at your own wedding on our Facebook fan page! Finally, we filmed Tejal and Shaurin who had a great statement station!  ...

2013 Wedding Trends!

To start the new year, we want to share the biggest wedding trends for this year with you! Tell us which one is your favorite on our Facebook Fan Page! Patterns: 2013 is going to be full of patterns like strips and chevron. The best way to incorporate these will be from something as small as table runners to your bridal party outfits. The best part about this trend is you can incorporate this as much or as little as you want. For example, have your bridesmaids wear a polka dot outfit and your groomsmen wear paisley ties! Do you want a bigger statement?! Then have table covers full of stripes and napkins full of different prints and textures! The possibilities are truly endless! The New Lounge: 2012 was all about having the lounge setting at your reception. However, we definitely think this will still be in for 2013, but even bigger and better! The beauty behind this trend is you can entertain your friends who want to dance all night while still allowing the rest of your guests to stick around, without being obligated to do the same. They can mingle, eat, chat, and dance if they want to! Lacey: While prints will be huge in 2013, so will lace! Whether it’s going to be the brides outfit completely made of lace or in the simpler details like décor, lace will be a great touch. We believe brides will start to incorporate these lace details in their runners, invitations, and even in wedding cakes! Technology: This will be the year of technology. If your wedding guests cannot attend, this will be the year in which we will see so many live stream weddings. There will be stations with ways to let your guests have a front view of your wedding! Twenties Theme: Whether it’s due to the Great Gatsby or just the vintage look, the roaring 20s is going to be the next biggest trend this year. The gayety era is going to make a huge boom this year in the wedding market. Remember, it’s all about lace, pearls, feathers, and the color ivory. Doesn’t this scream wedding?! Food Trucks: 2013 is going to be full of after parties after your reception, and...

Holiday Themed Wedding!

Who doesn’t love this time of the year? Also, who does not love weddings? Having them both together is truly the best! We have some great tips for you on how you can have the perfect holiday themed wedding! To begin, you must create a theme. Try to start with your invitations because this is going to be the first glimpse your guests will get of your wedding. We have created a great pinterest board to give you a place to find some great inspiration! Once you have decided on your theme, try to make sure you dress your bridesmaids appropriately. This is the perfect way to incorporate darker colors like blacks, plums, and blood red. You can do the same with your décor or you can always go with the classic “winter wonderland” theme. For example, we have seen many brides incorporate white branches through the aisle. To keep the winter wonderland theme, you can simply cover your chairs with white silk and have a plain white aisle. The beauty of this theme is that you can use white flowers like white roses and hydrangeas, which are cheaper flower varieties than the rest!   For your reception, there are a variety of ways to keep your holiday theme fun and creative. Before your guests arrive into the ballroom, you can make the place cards be a statement station. For actual center pieces, incorporating dark red and black is extremely seductive and romantic. Here are some of our favorite pieces. We even shot a “fire and ice” themed table top with Donnie Brown! Also, to keep the new year in mind by having your colors revolve around metallics and golds. We have also seen many brides stick with all white and incorporate just one color like blue or purple through lighting. Finally, a great way to integrate that holiday theme is through wedding favors! We have seen some brides who give their guests individual ornaments like this:   or edible favors like gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies shaped like snowmen, or even cake balls! We have even seen brides give away brand new planners for the new year! Did we miss anything?...

The Perfect Holiday Proposal!

Who does not love this time of the year? December truly reminds me of family coming together, the holidays, and not to mention, love. We have found a variety of holiday proposals that add the cherry on top during this festive season. I have geared all of these scenarios to different personalities, so pick the one that fits you the best. For The Child in You: Dress up as Santa-This can be done with a group of friends. Try to get some of her cousins or those of a younger age that need to make a visit to see Santa. Let the children make their wishes, and then have her sit in your lap! This is a great way to incorporate the holiday into your proposal! The Creative One: 25 Days of Giving- Create a retail calendar of memorable gifts that remind you of her. Have her unwrap each gift one day at time and save the best for last on the day of Christmas! The Animal Lover: This is a great way to incorporate your or her pet within the proposal! Dress up your cat or dog as a reindeer, Santa Claus, Elf, or even in an tacky Christmas sweater. Have the ring attached to something tied around the pet’s neck, and have them either wake her up or just approach her after a long day’s work. Once the dog or cat approaches her, then get down on one knee once she sees the ring! The Memorable One: Want a grand proposal this year? Then have your romantic speech ready right before the countdown and when everyone is puckering up for their midnight kiss; then pop the question! It will be a party she will never forget! Flip Book: We offer a picture flipbook at events, and this would be a great way to capture the moment! We shot this video for Christmas in July and you can see how the flipbook works in action! If your loved one is someone who wants to have family and friends around, then this would be a great excuse to throw a fabulous party. During the party, ask her to do something fun with you in this flipbook station. Then all you need to do...

Fall Themed H’orderves!

There is a variety of h’orderves that brides can choose from, but there are some must-haves to make it truly fall-themed. It’s all about using ingredients that are fresh of the season. The Centerpiece: Remember, a great appetizer can serve two purposes. One can be the obvious, as food, of course, but it can also stand as a unique centerpiece. We really loved this pumpkin shaped cheese mold, which is just perfect for this type of idea. It can even serve as a great conversation-starter for your guests. It’s a mix of white cheddar cheese, cream cheese, and goat cheese. You can just spread some of your favorite crackers around it with some veggies, like bell peppers. Seasonal: Sweet potatoes, squash, and apples are extremely popular this season. Therefore, you can be sure that they will be at their freshest state. We have seen brides put some creative things on their menu for their guests like curried sweet potato apple soup in shot glasses Comfort Food: Fall is all about keeping the soul warm. A great way to stick with the season is to bring in those comfort foods as mini bite-size treats for your guests. We loved these mini grilled cheese and tomato shots. Apple Cartwheels: These apples, which are filled with peanut butter, honey, chocolate chips, and raisins, are great finger foods mixed with just the right amount of decadence. Statement Station: Finally, we believe during any cocktail hour there should be a statement station. Some typical ones are cheese, fruit, or drinks’ stations. We recently saw this cheese cake display and fell in love! Your guests will love how big and bold this looks and not to mention, beautiful! We even suggest to brides that they add another section of fruits, nuts, and honey. We found this great recipe for glazed figs from Food Network. Just add these little beauties on skewers next to your cheese station to add that last touch of...

Best Ways To Use Thanksgiving Leftovers!

Did you know about 45 million turkeys will be consumed around the country on November 22nd? The morning after Thanksgiving the same issue occurs…What should I do with all of these leftovers? Here are some great ways to make some yummy dishes with those leftovers! New and Improved! Turkey Squash Soup: This is a great soup to warm you up on a cold winter day. The best part is you just need to use that leftover turkey as your main ingredient. The Moist Maker: That’s right I have figured out how to make the infamous “Moist Maker” from Friends! All you need to do is use the leftover stuffing and soak it in gravy for about 5-10 minutes. Then add this delicious moist maker to any regular old turkey sandwich! Use and Create! Mashed Potatoes: My absolute favorite way to use leftover mashed potatoes is to incorporate them in the filling potpies or even Shepherd’s pie! A close second would be forming them into little circles and make them into potato cakes for any time of the day! Rolls: Any leftover rolls of bread can be frozen and used as croutons later! Sweet Potato Pie: If you have leftover yams, then I got you covered! This recipe is so delicious, and I personally think it tastes even better than the yams alone! Stuffed Mac and Cheese: This is one of my favorites! All you need to do is mix in old stuffing into freshly made mac and cheese! This decadent meal will satisfy your cravings and have you needing a true afternoon nap. How do you use your leftovers?! I will be back...

Chemistry is Key!

We have stressed over and over to our brides that chemistry is key with their wedding filmmaker. Chemistry is crucial because they’ll be spending many hours, if not days, with us, their filmmakers. We start off by inviting each one of our clients to our studio or for a conference call, so we can learn about them and they can learn about us. We love what we do and therefore, we share our passion with our clients. We invite them to come to our studio to see what we do and how we do it. We want to ensure that each one of our brides is a good fit for us and we’re a good fit for them. They are commissioning a team of artists and we want them to experience our art. Once couples have commissioned a filmmaker, they should set up an appointment to meet their filmmaker prior to the wedding. We meet with our brides and grooms whenever it is convenient for them, and have even had meetings via Skype for our clients across the globe. There are a variety of questions couples must ask of themselves and of their filmmaker during the first appointment: Do you want the wedding film to be more documentary or cinematic in style? How should the wedding story be conveyed through the film? What are the most important elements to have documented? Will the film crew have backup equipment, etc? It’s important to make sure they not only click with their filmmaker, but also that they explain what is extremely important to capture. Below is a film with some of our past brides talking about their experience with our studio.  ...

Favorite Fall Wedding Themes!

With the time changing, shorter days, and the weather getting cooler, we are starting to see more fall wedding themes popping up! Seasonal Décor: This is the time to use what is in season! We have seen a variety of brides use pumpkins, squashes, pine cones, and leaves to decorate their venues! Fall Food: The best food to incorporate is what is fresh and in season! This would be a great time to use foods like pumpkin, butternut, and cinnamon. Fashion Trends: This year is all about switching from the traditional look. A high low cut is becoming extremely popular, and the best part about this trend is you can flaunt your shoes! Hair/Makeup: It’s all about keeping your look romantic and natural. This is the time to use natural waves and braids. Keep your look soft and incorporate some fresh flowers. Finally, this is the time to use a bold lip with either red or berry! Cocktail: Just like it was mentioned with the food trends, you should go with what is in season for your cocktails! This is the best time to make apple ciders, pumpkin flavored vodkas, baileys, and bourbon! One favorite cocktail to serve during the fall and winter is a bourbon hot toddy! I mean, I guarantee that if you look right now for a costume you are going to easily spend around 100 bucks, if not more. Well, this year we have something special for you: a DIY Jellyfish costume that costs less than 50 bucks! I want to say thank you to my model, Liza, for helping me out on this one! What you will need: Clear umbrella Scissors White streamer Sparkly string Tape Directions: You will need to cut the white streamers and use them, along with the sparkly string, to cover all of the metal parts of the umbrella. For the first 8 tentacles, cut the white streamer into strips of various lengths. Tape the streamer to the inside and outside of the rim of the umbrella. The outside streamer length can be made to just cover the metal. However, make the inside strips long and vary their lengths so it looks more realistic!     2. When you are taping the streamer on the outside, place the sparkly string in between the umbrella and streamer. Therefore, sandwich the sparkly string between the top of the umbrella and white streamer.   3. Once you have attached all the tentacles you are done! Just throw on something that is all white and you are complete!  We even open and closed the umbrella to resemble the jellyfish is moving!   How fabulous is this?! Send us some of your DIY costumes! Best Makeup to Wear for Videos!

If you’re on camera, you can bet that people are watching you and sometimes only you. Therefore, you want to make sure you are wearing the right makeup to enhance your best features. Here are some great tips to highlight your beauty. Powder: It’s really easy to notice if anyone is glistening or even shiny through the camera. Always use powder to help minimize your pores and reduce that shine. Try to stay away from SPF powders because it is going to make you look oilier. Color: Cameras often make us look very washed out or even pale because colors sometimes do not show up well on camera. Women should do their best to avoid dark colors like red and purple as under tones because they can give you a very pale look. Stick to warm and natural colors because it helps your skin look fresher. Also, it’s extremely important to wear a foundation that matches your skin tone! Concealer: This is going to be your best weapon to hiding those imperfections without “caking” on the makeup. Use concealer under your eyes to brighten them up, reduce redness, and hide acne. Concealers that have a gel-like texture do that little bit extra to avoid this caking affect. Eyebrows: Defining your eyebrows provides a complete overall look that frames your face. Remember, cameras can really wash you out; eyebrow definition will create a frame to follow and focus on while helping to define expressive features. Matte: It’s all about keeping your look classic for the camera. The one thing you want to stay away from is any shiny eye shadows because it will reflect the light. Sticking to all things matte will give a soft look and never look over done. The only time you should use something with shimmer is under your brown bone. This will highlight your features, but in a subtle way. Lips: Try again to stick only to a matte lipstick and always use a lip liner. The liner is like defining your brows because it will define the shape of your mouth. Avoid any lipsticks that have that “frost” effect because it will make you look pale. Contouring: The recent rave in makeup is how celebrity, Kim Kardashian, wears her...

It’s so important to choose a fragrance or cologne that not only represents you, but something you want to relive your wedding day through. We created a video in the past that we truly love with Clive Christian and Neiman Marcus! The V line from Clive Christian created two fragrances for him and her. Each fragrance has their own hints of originality, but together they complement each other very well. How fabulous would it be to wear a perfume and cologne that complement one another on your wedding day?! There is great history and heritage associated with these fragrances, and this was the second release from Clive Christian. Lighting Is Everything!

When you are planning a wedding, it seems that every little detail is very important. However, when you are planning your reception décor and ambiance, well, lighting is everything. Lighting can make or break your whole reception décor!  Here are some great steps to make sure everything comes together smoothly and beautifully. Venue: Do not even inquire about your reception décor without your venue! It’s almost a waste of time to plan everything you want without the dimensions of the room and floor plan. Theme: Once you have booked your venue, then choose the theme of lighting you would like to have. For example, you can have a romantic, intimate, bold, or bright theme. Each theme will require different kinds of lighting. Pictures: If there are reception décor you love, then it’s best to bring pictures of those things to the lighting company. It’s the easiest way to show what you love through pictures and not words. Check out our Pinterest board for more inspirations. Ask: Once you have decided on a theme and the company you are going to use, that you should always ask about the number of lights they are going to provide you with within that proposal. This can vary between each company and you want to make sure you are getting enough bang for your buck. Whatever number is decided, make sure it’s in the contract. Electric company: You want to make sure that whatever electric company they use is reliable; otherwise you may have no light during your event! It’s very important to do your homework for your wedding vendors. It will help make sure you are secure and get the wedding reception you have always dreamt about. I will be back...

How To Give a Flawless Speech

Nothing is worse than attending a wedding reception and listening to speeches that are either way too long or just plain bad. I cannot say how many weddings I have attended where the speeches were just terrible. It can be very hard to keep the audience engaged with your speech and still make it personal to the couple. However, I have some great tips here that may help you create that speech that people will not only remember, but love. Keep it short: I cannot tell you how often it happens that speeches literally drag on and on. No one wants to listen to anyone for over 10 minutes. Try to give a personal story, but eliminate the details. Otherwise, you will lose the guests! Be somewhat sober: It’s okay to have a drink or two to help ease those jitters, but nothing is worse than a best man speech gone raunchy or a non-stop crying bridesmaid. Practice: Practice your speech! I cannot convey enough how much it helps to have even one run through. It will help organize your thoughts and create a good flow.
